Ecohydrology - one of the
first modules I’ve completed here at Utrecht – and I can confirm it was a
success. This success could perhaps be due to the fact that it ties so neatly
together with my up and coming dissertation (yet to be written – focusing on a wildfire
in NW Ireland). The course covered content from plant-environment relations
to forest ecohydrology and modelling. Particularly interesting was the NICHE
modelling coursework we were set. Through discovering the potential of NICHE
environmental modelling myself, I now feel compelled to explore the
possibilities of including this method of analysis in my own extended piece of
work. Using the data I collected last July in Ireland, it would be possible to
build a model that could show if any of the flora species I am studying are now
occupying a new ecological NICHE due to changes in the abiotic environment left
by a wildfire that spread in 2011. The content of this course was relevant,
based firmly in the realm of physical geography/ecology and fit well with my
studies at UCL leaving me feeling satisfied and fired up, full of questions
for my dissertation.
